CHAPTER SIX

A midnight madness sale? WTF? The motorcycle dealership was lit up like Christmas, and not a Blood in sight. Shit! There were pedestrians all over the damn place, even a woman with baby in a stroller!

I put up my hand and pointed to the deserted parking lot of the Texas Paper and Printing Company a few blocks down. The bikes followed.

Whiz drew up beside me. "What's up with all the people?" He had to shout over the roar of bikes.

I took off my helmet as Arthur and Fossy joined me. I didn't answer for a moment, my attention focused on the scene. I had this bad feeling I was being set up. I looked around suddenly, noticing we were short at least one very prominent member.

"Where's Carter?" I asked Fossy.

He shrugged. "Dunno."

"What do you mean, you don't know?" I got off my bike, an American-made Harley with a V Twin motor. While I waited for someone brave enough to answer, I looked at my bike. I'd been riding it since I was a teenager. The seat was well worn and, like a lover, caressed every curve as I straddled it. I'd drive it until it died, or I did.

Fossy started to stammer, never a good sign. I walked over and shook my head. He fell silent. "You were told to keep an eye on Carter. Now, where is he?"

Whiz stated to fiddle with his cell phone. I reached over and slapped the phone out of his hand. It fell on the pavement and shattered. "We gave him to the Prospects," he looked disparagingly at his broken cell phone.

"Did I tell you to let those morons watch him?"

"No, but," Whiz began, "Carter said he had to go to the drug store for his pills, you know… Sixty-nine went with him."

I sighed. Sixty-nine. God knows where they'd ended up. If that one had a brain, he'd be dangerous.

"So, what now?" Fossy asked.

Whiz was picking up the pieces of his phone.

"Leave that," I grunted.

He dropped the pieces.

"The Bloods knew we were coming. There's either a rat in our ranks, or… worse." I walked back to my Harley. "Back to the clubhouse." I pointed at Fossy and Whiz. "You find Carter and bring him to me!"

"Yes, Boss." I got them in unison. I waited until they rode off then roared out of the parking lot myself.

As I rode, it started to rain. I slowed a little. I couldn't see a damned thing. The rain was cold and I hadn't brought my leather jacket. By the time we got back to the clubhouse, I was chilled to the bone.

Elizabeth was in the bar. She poured me some hot coffee while the others drank beer. She seemed closemouthed, avoiding my gaze. Something was up. When she headed to the back room, I followed her. "Can I help you with something?"

"No." She shook her head. "You should take off those wet clothes. You'll catch your—"

"Elizabeth!" I snapped. "Where's Carter?"

She turned to look at me. "The Club is all he has, Sam.
